When you are learning Japanese it is essential to have a Japanese keyboard installed on your computer. You don't need to buy a keyboard from Japan to be able to type in Japanese. Installing the keyboard is easy.

For windows users who have IME Japanese keyboard installed here are some helpful tips. To switch between English and Japanese keyboard you press Ctl + Shift. You can just use your Japanese keyboard because it already has a function to type in English.
To change between Roman letters and Hiragana press ALT + ~. To switch to katakana letters press Alt + Caps lock and to change back to Hiragana use Ctl + Caps lock.
The hiragana and katakana vowels can be converted to small letters by pressing L before the letter. Example L + I = ぃ. You can also do this for the symbols Ya, yu, yo and tsu.
If you type certain words in Japanese and hit space bar, you can convert the word into a symbol or special character like Stars, arrows and music notes. Here are some examples of the common keywords you can use.
There are two ways to write the sounds zu and ji in Japanese. However when you type zu and ji on your keyboard it always comes out as ず and じ. In order to get the symbols to show up as づ and ぢ you need to type them as du and di.
Sometimes when you write a word in Japanese and try to convert it to kanji, it splits the words into two different words. This can be frustrating because it prevents you from easily bringing up the correct symbols for the word. To fix this problem, press Shift + Left/Right to select the whole word and after doing so you can use the space bar to convert the characters.
If you wish to type something in English between words in Japanese, all you have to do is press shift + the first letter of the English word and you will be typing in English until you hit enter and return to Japanese.
